Billa is an out and out Ajit film. Don?t forget to carry a whistle with you when you watch Ajit meld into two characters- Billa with his Armani suit, Rayban glasses, has a Bond look about him and is cucumber cool while Velu is a riot as he brings the house down with typical one-liners (Athu aaru thalai, Naan oru thalai). Ajit brings to Tamil cinema a desification of Steven Segal, Van Damme style of pure high octane action and humour. He seems to be telling the audiences to just sit back and enjoy the fireworks. In short Ajit as Billa is a rocker!

Hi guys V’ve won.. Our Thala”s BILLA is a blockbuster read Sify review here…
To remake a 27-year old Rajinikanth film with another actor at a time when he is still the superstar, is a major challenge for any director. But Vishnu Vardhan is a daring young man who took up the challenge along with Ajit and they have come out with a fresh new Billa, an escapist comic book like fantasy film, which has been faithful to the original in spirit and soul. Spiffily shot and stylishly packaged, the remake is slick and will certainly appeal to today’s youth audiences.
Vishnu’s Billa is the first designer-look Kollywood film with classy action cuts. It’s a technically chic, racy, engrossing entertainer with a Hollywood look. The director wears his Hollywood DVD influence on his sleeve, the way a shot is framed, and with black and white colours dominating as the camera angles convey style! Ajit looks sensational and clearly he is at home, playing dual roles of Billa and Velu. He is suave, dashing, and debonair and has terrific screen presence which makes the film work big time. You just cannot think of any other actor in Tamil donning the role made memorable by Rajinikanth.
Rajinikanth special: The Boss is back
The film is set in Malaysia to give it a rich look. Billa (Ajit) is a modern day suited and booted underworld don who moves around in the company of two glamour girls Sasha (Nayanthara) and CJ (Namitha) who are part of his gang. Billa deals in all nefarious activities like gun running and drugs and has connections with international mafia gangs. The police force in 11 countries is in hot pursuit of Billa who they feel will lead them to Jagdish, the kingpin behind all the illegal operations. After successfully dodging the cops across the world, Billa is eventually pinned down by a sincere DCP of the Malaysian police Jaiprakash (Prabhu) after a spectacular car chase in which he is fatally injured.
Vishnu: Ajit is a cool dude
Now Jai (Prabhu) sees Billa’s death as an opportunity to uncover the entire mob ring by replacing him with a look-alike Velu (Ajit) a petty small time crook and a simpleton to infiltrate into the mafia. Velu alias Billa is able to do the impossible by getting all the information that Jai wanted except about Jagdish the master brain of the underworld. But it’s when Jai gets killed, that the real problem arises because he was the only man who knew that the real Billa is dead, and that Velu is actually a police mole. The other police officers investigating the case Gokulnath (Rahman) from the Interpol and the local police chief Anil (Aditya) refuses to believe Velu’s statement that he is not Billa when he is caught and interrogated. Velu escapes from police custody and with the help of Sasha uncover the shocking truth about the identity of Jagdish, which leads to a stunning climax.
The director and his team change the norms of commercial Tamil cinema and breaks new ground by having a script comprising of no more than six- seven dialogue tracks, there is no lengthy dialogues, mush or melodrama, all essential ingredients for mass masala films. The EQ (emotional quotient) which is there in large doses in Tamil films is absent here as Vishnu and Ajit are targeting only the multiplex audiences and they are quite honest about it. Yuvan’s title track and theme music is one of the highlights of the film, though the songs fall flat! The re-mix title song My name is Billa… is no patch on the original and lacks its fervor, while the other re-mix number Vethalaiya Pottendi… has a good beat that makes you dance and is well shot The only mass number is Seval Kodi.., with Vijay Yesudas’s striking voice and colourful picturisation .
For Vishnu Vardhan, a one-time assistant of the guru of cinematography Santosh Sivan, everything is visual and is dictated by the camera. Billa is a film where characters are playing mind games. So Vishnu’s cameraman Nirav Shah has used the super 35 mm and his camera is brilliant displaying an array of flourishes- freeze frames, optical dissolves, colour saturated images, giving a static energy to the frames, aided by Sreekar Prasad’s razor sharp editing. The action scenes have been superbly choreographed by William Ong and are a major highlight.
Billa is an out and out Ajit film. Don’t forget to carry a whistle with you when you watch Ajit meld into two characters- Billa with his Armani suit, Rayban glasses, has a Bond look about him and is cucumber cool while Velu is a riot as he brings the house down with typical one-liners (Athu aaru thalai, Naan oru thalai). Ajit brings to Tamil cinema a desification of Steven Segal, Van Damme style of pure high octane action and humour. He seems to be telling the audiences to just sit back and enjoy the fireworks. In short Ajit as Billa is a rocker!
Nayanthara has given her famous six-yard saris a miss and has decided to go full throttle to look her sexiest best in sizzling hot micro-mini shorts, leather jacket, tall boots! The gorgeous Nayan as Sasha is a show stopper and no Tamil heroine has looked so glamorous on screen in recent times, thanks to her right attitude and stylist Anu Vardhan. Her tan make-up and her costumes are designed with the intention to make your jaw drop. She has a beautiful body which she flaunts daringly and has no qualms about appearing in a two-piece string bikini and is also able to bring out the cold aloofness and bitterness of her character.
All about Billa : Only on Sify.com
Namitha as CJ oozes sex appeal, is surprisingly restrained and her silences give meaning to the deep loyalty and devotion that her character has for Billa. Prabhu as the police officer is a delight while Rahman and Aditya are adequate. New girl Rose Dawn is a disappointment in the item number and is no match to Helen or Kareena’s sensuous jig.
Billa delivers the goods with its great star cast, a designer look, technical glitz, perfect chemistry making it an entertainment extravaganza. Fasten your seat belts and enjoy the ride. Don’t miss it.
Verdict- Racy & Rocking
December 14th, 2007 at 12:47 pm
HI this’s galatta.com’s review…. Common guys talk about BILLA to everyone and make it a gr8 success.. Thala da
The review, first anywhere in the world!
It is not difficult to catch the ‘coooool’ness of Billa in brief… it is impossible!
Yes, Vishnu Vardhan’s Billa (which premiered in a few select cinema halls in Chennai today), releasing tomorrow, proved that it is not just another remake of an old cult film, but magical and a visual treat with its own style and individuality.
Vishnu’s style-mantra project starts with a bang and ends in an explosion, that’s how punch-packed it is. “Part tribute, part original, all slick” is a good description of this movie in which everyone (not just the hero!) looks and sounds simply smashing, with their clipped dialogues, power-dressing and loads of attitude. Plus, Vishnu has ensured that the movie stays within the 2 hour-15 minute time frame, a proof of the tight script and screenplay.
Does Billa actually need a story introduction? Proving wrong all the noise that Vishnu’s Billa is exactly like Shah Rukh Khan’s Don, the movie is INDEED like the Rajinikanth “original”… but with twists and a look and feel completely unique and probably the starkest ever made in Tamil cinema. Quite unlike SRK’s Don, the colours in Billa are not rich and opulent – they are clean, suppressed, contemporary, even Zen at times. There is a lot of black, brown and olive hues, set in contrast to great swathes of white and cream. In such starkness, Ajith as Billa, comes forth larger than life and more stylish than any movie he has done in a long time.
Speaking of Ajith, he is quite clearly the very centre of the movie; or as our December issue of Galatta Cinema magazine shows, he is the eye of the storm that tosses you about for 2+ hours. He looks handsome, hot and very much a “Thala”. While SRK had a metrosexual, clean-shaven look, Ajith sports a devil-may-care and raw-edged stubble that only adds to the masculinity. Plus, his personality is dark, cold and silent as Billa; in complete contrast to the cheeky Velu.
With Billa, the female is as deadly, if not deadlier, than the male. Namitha plays CJ, the gangster’s moll, but with a toughness and shrewdness worthy of any top boss. She is sexy, unabashed, fearless and perhaps even as ruthless as Billa himself. And she loves him to death. Literally.
Nayantara is the one out to tame the beast, consumed by the need for revenge. She is an electric mix of sexy and tough, beauty and fighting skill.
Prabhu is inimitably Prabhu. His authority and intelligence reminds one of Gautam Vishwanath of Mani Ratnam’s Agninakshatram. Rahman plays the Interpol officer with some deadly tricks up his sleeve and Rose Dawn plays the woman who quite possibly, has put all these people together.
David Billa (Ajith). Most-wanted gangster, hiding and operating out of Malaysia, on the top of Interpol’s criminal list. A lone tiger he is, and a ruthless one at that. As he says, “Look at history. If you want to live, to survive, you can kill any number of people, for any reason.” This is Billa – scheming, clever, slippery, enigmatic and dangerous. No one knows his story, really, except that he literally clawed his way to where he is now, from an orphaned and deprived childhood to the top of the food chain. Along the way, he bent and broke every rule for not just survival, but for money, power and love of the game.
DSP Jayprakash (Prabhu) has spent a huge chunk of the last few years looking for the elusive Billa. He has left a life behind in India, only to base himself in Malaysia and strategise the capture of the man who has 50 high-profile crime cases slapped against him. As luck would have it, his path does cross Billa’s and from then on, it’s a rollercoaster ride. What happens to Billa? Who is Velu? How does Jayprakash use him to round up Billa’s operations? DOES he actually close Billa’s shop for good? How are CJ (Namitha) and Sasha (Nayantara) involved? How does he get the help of Interpol officer Gokulnath (Rahman)? What part does Rhia (Rose Dawn) play in Billa’s life? Questions, questions, questions. For a movie that is supposedly a religious remake of the original, Vishnu’s Billa manages to evoke all these doubts and keep you admiring everything from the view to the sounds and thrills.
Two people who deserve special mention for Billa looking and sounding as good as it does are Nirav Shah and Yuvanshankar Raja.
Nirav has magic in his camera and the way he has played with angles and lighting quite on par with a Hollywood biggie – very international, very cool. Everyone knows the kind of output he gives in a Vishnu Vardhan movie, but the clean colours, the cold cruelty and the minimalistic backdrops are brought to complete clarity by him.
Yuvan’s music is brilliant! Every single song sounds great and now that you can experience the audio-visuals, it only gets better. The music gives the visuals so much attitude, so much mystery and arrogance that it is a superb blend. The theme song is probably the best because it arrives with drama and fervour at the right places throughout the movie.
Anu Vardhan’s costumes are in keeping with the personalities of the protagonists – Ajith is urbane and casually, carelessly slick in suits, as Billa; scruffy and lovable as Velu in faded jeans and messy t-shirts and shirts; Nayantara is power-packed and as attitude-filled as Billa himself and dressed in leather, tights, boots and olives. Namitha is a true moll without being a floozy. She is curvaceous, devoted to Billa and shrewd in her own way. The actresses’ roles could have been a bit more or a bit stronger, but we will leave that point for now.
All in all, Billa is definitely worth a watch. Or two. Or three or more!
Billa is back… and he is smashingly dynamic!

Behindwoods review
Sleek masala entertainer, is a genre which Tamil cinema is not much used to. Thanks to bravery of Vishnu and Ajith, you will see more such movies from now on.
To remake a film which was a trendsetter of its times involving someone who was and continues to be the super star, requires sharp skills and is tantamount to walking on thin ice. But where Vishnu Vardhan scores is in his crystal clear vision. He doesn’t want to challenge the original nor change its content. All he wants to do was to repackage it stylishly for today’s trend with some present avant-garde styles in film making. The deliberate attempts by the director not to follow the super star’s style are palpable in every frame which has made Billa stand out tall and high.
Ajith as the ruthless David Billa is a revelation. Stylish, menacing and electrifying, he seems to have thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and has completely lived up to it. Rajinikanth can definitely be proud of his successor he has chosen for the tough job.
As the simpleton Velu, Ajith is lively and light, combining with Prabhu for some great moments. When asked by Prabhu to don the role of Billa, Velu expresses his dislike saying that Lord Muruga will not approve of this. When Prabhu sights sura samhara as an example, Ajith counters him saying that ‘avarukku aaru thala, aana enakku orey thala’, having his fans simply break into raptures.
The introductory scene of Nayantara rocks and is on par with such scenes of any other hero of current times. She looks fit, debonair and effortlessly sizzles. Namitha as CJ and Billa’s lover appears in glamorous outfits and satisfies her fans. Prabhu as DCP, cannot be better. Rahman as Interpol officer has done his job well.
Action scenes directed by stunt man William Ong are the highlights. The car chase sequences are first of its kind in Tamil, with Ajith’s racing image adding to the grandeur. Sound effects are perfect and in sync with natural sound and the credit goes to
Ayyappan. His efforts come to the fore especially in action sequences. Yuvan Shankar does it once again. ‘My name is Billa’, though shot differently, lacks the original’s magic. The ‘Vethalayai Pottendi’ number could also have been better.
Vishnu doesn’t waste too much time or dialogues on character building. He seems to have depended more on rapid cuts to make the screen play tighter and taut. The two biggest pillars of support for him come from costume department and cinematography section. Kudos to Vishnu’s wife, Anu Vardhan’s hard work and eye for details to get the colors and feel of the costumes perfect. Nirav Shah, the cinematographer’s work is of superlative nature and the result is an absolute visual delight. Seamless editing by Sreekar Prasad adds to the flow of the film.
On the whole, neatly packaged, Billa has lived up to its hype. If you are looking for an enjoyable fantasy ride, you wouldn’t be disappointed.
Verdict: Masala entertainment redefined
Thala you always rocks !!!!!!!

hai fans , this is vikki. i’m back.you believe me or not
the hottest news in the city every where is about the film billa. it is not only because the film is most stylish but it is done by the ajith kumar, the man known for dignity, hardwork, above all a man with positive mental attitude . and iam sure billa is going to be block buster of 2007 and i expect our thala to choose good scripts like this.
also i request our fans to create awareness about billa everywhere. then i request all the fans to ask sun music to play thala songs especially from billa .
also i request thala to choose the script carefully and then give impotance to the songs and music. thala i wish to convey one more thing -you have already reached your peak so to keep track of this choose films like billa/ any of your mega hit movies…ok it’s over. my mail id is viggy.1985@gmail.com. any one can send any comments to me
