‘THE FILM INDUSTRY HAS ALWAYS BEEN A SOFT TARGET’ …says Thala Ajith, as he talks about a host of issues with CT
The recent events affecting the film industry also have had actors voice their support for their peers. And the flaring up of issues related to different religious communities — especially in the field of entertainment — has, in fact, stunned many. Thala Ajith raises one pertinent question to CT after looking at the current goings-on — where are we heading as a nation?
Says Ajith, “I think it’s high time we place our hand on our heart and ask ourselves — each one of the 100 crore people in this country — where are we heading as a nation? I am an actor by profession just like how people are bankers or journalists. And when the elections come, I — just like everyone else — stand in a queue and cast my vote. I am one among you and like all of you, I am concerned about our country. May be being an actor I have a platform where I can be heard and I am trying to make use of it in a positive sense rather than trying to use it for any personal, vested interest.”
He adds, “Yesterday being Republic Day, I’m sure it’s on everyone’s minds that it’s been 64 years since we got freedom but we need to ask ourselves where we are heading. It’s not about individual issues. We as a people collectively don’t have a problem — all of us, including me, have friends belonging to different religions. We celebrate each others’ events and functions with equal importance. Even our leaders, like CM Madam Jayalalitha and our former CM Kalaignar Karunanidhi, who’s an atheist, participate in functions of other religious communities. We, as a society, are a very tolerant and secular society.”
Ajith feels that we are all happy as a society but it is a select few who are trying to damage society by influencing people the wrong way. “Instead of finding fault, let us try to live happily together as a nation. The pride of being one nation should come before anything else,” he says adding, “Unfortunately, the film industry has always been a soft target. For industries like drama and theatre and cinema, this is not a healthy trend. We should not encourage people who try to indulge in sensationalism for publicity. I am saying this to all the 100 crore people in India, including myself. The few people who come to streets at the drop of a hat to protest causing nuisance to the common man, the law and order — they are just a fraction of the population. There are lakhs of people who wish well for the state and who are going about their duties and obligations without stepping on anyone’s toes. It doesn’t mean they don’t care for their country. And every person who comes and protests on the street is not necessarily patriotic, his intentions could be wrong. I am just saying, open your eyes and see through this.”
As far as issues in the country go, Ajith says, “All our leaders over the last decade or two have been trying to sort out issues, be it nationalization of rivers or the Sri Lankan issue. I stand in line just like each one of you hoping that the respective governments will find solutions. By getting actors to go on a procession is not going to solve problems. The problem here is an actor participates in it out of fear because he’ll be branded non-patriotic and then if he doesn’t, he faces the wrath of his colleagues. I cast a vote, like the public, hoping that the government will take care of such issues.”
The film industry and some actors in recent times, like Kamal who is facing issues with Vishwaroopam and Trisha, who faced issues with a statement she made, are being seen as the unfortunate target of some people. Ajith says, “Recently, even Trisha was victimized for some comment which could have just been part of a jovial conversation. There are much more serious issues to be dealt with. The people who really care about the country are going about fulfilling their responsibilities, their obligations to their family and country without creating a ruckus and disturbing the public. Just like you, I want my child to grow up in a safe and sound environment. Today, as a citizen, I am worried and scared just like you all. Being a citizen of this country, I have a right to voice my fear.”

see vishwaroopam film which seems very good to see, five of my bangalore friends said. our kamal sir conveyed a message about terrorist and american govt activities in afganisthan.
Ok thala we agree with ur statement but you have to think one that why some heroes have been acting against muslims like Vijayakanth, Arjun, Vijay, Kamal ? Vijayakanth and Kamal hurt muslims always but you are good pls dont act like that movies
Every Indian must think about this
Disappointed in reading the Ajith’s Comment about Vishwaroopam. Why the Hell Kamal need to produce the film which includes Islamic cultural activities? He used to do these everytime targetting the religion Islam. Films like Heyram & Unnaippol Oruvan are evidence for this. Will the Ajith able to open his mouth against it?????
Dear Brother Assam & Rashid,
Mr. Kammal & Mr.Ajith lying in the same Industry, Thala has to give his support first.
Mainly Kammal sir who is loving the people not the cast character,he clearly pictured us abt the happening in Afghanistan,Not in our country.
In our country we Hindu & Musilm were always friends,Here in our india we given equal rights to each citizen
In Pakistan or afghan or their Game,No hindu were been allowed ,But here
1. Dr.A.P.J.Abdul kalam , Former President & Scientist
2. Mohd.Azharrudin -Former Indian Cricket Captain
and so many of yours in good position in several departments
Abt the issue of viswaroopam, some politician searching for an publicity & advertisement , But we the unity people known very well which is Bad or Good.
Pls brothers hereafter dont split-up the relationship by saying Islam, Hindu,Christian,we are all one , Only we have two models MEN & WOMEN.
We should support for Kammal sir who is really dedicating in his work and taking our film industry to the Hollywood level.
Dear Kalyan
Thank you for your suggestion,
If kamalhasan is loving people, Why he should take a film which insults other religion???
Yes, India provide equal right to everyone, films like vishwaroopam will spoil that rights.
Regarding your comment for no Hindus are allowed in Afghanistan & Pakistan, Muslims have fought harder including with other religious people to bring freedom to India. Also there are many Muslim people living in India. Therefore they should be allowed to participate in politics and sports etc.
You also said that some politicians searching for publicity and advertisements, I strongly disagree with this. Most of the people who are not belong to any political parties are also protesting to be banned vishwaroopam. Take countries like Malaysia, Kuwait, Dubai and Srilanka, Can I know which political party is protesting to ban this film?
I’m so thankful for you for saying all the people are one don’t separate them by religion, but films like this will make us so hurt brother. Kamal has used the islamic worship activities to prove that they are terrorist, therefore this will not be taken consideration into Afghanistan and Pakistan instead it will apply for all the Muslims throughout the world. Think this in our perspective brother!
If kamal need to take our cinema into Hollywood level he should not take films insulting or hurting other religion. He should take films which should be welcomed by all the community then that will be his true success.
Therefore It doesn’t mean that Ajith has to give his support if they are lying in the same industry if it is hurting other religious people.
Dear Brother,
Once again you are lying in the same argument, First pls Understand the difference between Life & Cinema, Life is ours which we live what we think either its a good or bad, But Cinema is a producing a film which the director tells both good & bad, we as a people must take a good things only, not a bad things, See so many adult stories (xxx movie) is releasing all over india with the character name may be a Hindu or Christian or Muslim but we are not banned such type of movie that contains a character name of Hindu , Muslim or Christian even though we are allowing this type of film, i don’t think the people is not getting rushed in theater , Those who like they are going to watch xxx movies. So this all in people mind they know well that its a cinema or drama, Suppose in Viswaroopam ,if kamal sir showed (Sandhana kadthal Veerapan as a Musilm, then we have the rights to oppose the film, but its not , he clearly pictured us abt the happenings in other country.
If you take Unnai pol oruvan movie , one of the terrorist is hindu, who is helping to sell the weapons, So all the Hindu is going to be a terrorist or Kamal sir is insulting the Hindu, no its not like that. People have two faces Good & Bad face. Kindly keep a full stop for this argument because we had many problems in our country eg: Poverty, Power Cut, corruption even we can take so many of the people killed in srilanka but we are not at all discussed on this subjects , A cinema which is a entertainer for 3 hrs we doing a argument because of one reason religion ,caste between us . So first as a Indian citizen i am saying that in my country All the peoples were my Brothers & Sisters, I love them all. God is One which i am seeing as a “The Vishnu” & U are seeing as a “The Great Allah”.
Regards,
Kalyan
