The actor asked to play the role in Mankatha because of his obsession for characters that are not your average man-next-door

The filmi-grapevine in Chennai says that Mankatha, directed by Venkat Prabhu with Ajith in the lead, is being delayed for political reasons. The film is produced by Dayanidhi Azhagiri, grandson of Karunanidhi, former CM of Tamilnadu. Venkat Prabhu dismisses the rumour as a figment of imagination! “I don’t deny that there were a few teething problems, but all is well now and we are busy burning midnight oil to release the movie at the earliest,” he says.
Initially when the film was planned, Ajith was not even thought of, says Venkat. “On learning that I was due to commence a new project, Ajith called me to congratulate me and mentioned that he’d be interested in working with me in case I am conceiving a theme in which there is a grey and different character. Without hesitation, I said that there was such a character in the project and he said he’d do that role. Now, I was in a spot as I had to revisit the draft of my script so as to create areas that would accommodate the star that he is! That character developed further and as we commenced the schedules, it grew bigger and better.”
The film is about a couple of bad guys wanting to earn a few quick bucks and Ajith, an extremely “bad guy” joins the gang. Trisha, Lakshmi Rai and Anjali are the heroines of the film. Ajith’s salt ‘n’ pepper look in the film has become a talking point. The film’s music is composed by Venkat’s cousin and maestro Illayaraja’s son Yuvan Shankar Raja. And yes, there is an item number too!
