Cine Star Ajith To Revive His Racing Passion
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Chennai: Tamil film actor Ajith Kumar will be back to racing this Sunday. Ajith, who had taken part in the National Racing Championships at Sriperumbudur in 2002, will make a comeback to motorsport at the MRF Racing Challenge on a Formula 1600 car in the last round at the Madras Motor Race Track.
“I missed the sport which I enjoy so much,” said Ajith, whose passion for the sport is well known. A back injury may have played a villain, and kept him off the track for six years, but on Friday, when he took the five laps during free practice, the rustiness did not show. “I clocked one minute 48 seconds, which is not bad considering the all time fastest record is held by Narain Karthikeyan, at 1 m 40.01 seconds. I hope to improve my timing to 1 m 45 seconds on Saturday,” said Ajith, speaking to TOI. The actor confessed that he was a little out of shape physically, since he had been unable to hit the gym due to other commitments. “But I am raring to go and have a shot at the championships on Sunday,” he added.
Former Formula One driver Narain Karthikeyan, who was instrumental in coercing Ajith back to the track, was at hand at Sriperumbudur during the practice session, and Ashwin Sundar. Pulling into the pit lane on two occasions the actor, an action hero in reel life, sought advice from Narain Karthikeyan and Ashwin Sundar for some tips for the qualifying races on Saturday. Ajith will be pitting his skill against 10 other drivers.
“I am participating in the event to raise more awareness for the sport, and with India hoping to play host (in 2011) to the Formula One, I want to give it my best,” said Ajith. The actor had taken a break from films when he participated in the National racing here eight years ago. He also Ajith had taken part in the Formula BMW championship in 2003 and the British Formula Scholarship class in 2004. “I came third on two occasions,” recalled the actor with pride.
