Actor Ajith Kumar, whose latest film Vedalam opened to packed theatres on Tuesday, is unlikely to have a release in 2016.
On Thursday night, the actor underwent a knee surgery at a city hospital. It is believed that he will not be available for shooting for the next few months. This means the actor will start shooting in the second half of the year and will probably have a release early in 2017.
Ajith Kumar sustained a serious injury when he was shooting a fast car sequence and stunt scene for Vishnuvardhan’s Arrambam that released in 2013.
The actor, who prefers doing his own stunts for his movies, recovered subsequently and finished the project without delay but this exertion reportedly aggravated the injury on his knee. After doctors advised him not to delay the surgery any further, Ajith Kumar decided to go under the knife, say those close to him.
This could not have come at a worse time for the Tamil film industry, which is grappling with several issues such as low ticket prices, movies produced with money borrowed at high interest rates, piracy and supply of movies exceeding the demand.
Over the last few movies, Ajith has been on a roll. Ever since Vishnuvardhan’s Arrambam , his two movies — Veeram and Yennai Arindhal — have done good business at the box-office. While his latest release — Vedalam — has been panned by most of the critics for being old-fashioned, the film has reportedly taken a good opening and trade analysts are saying that it will make money. Ajith is the only actor amongst the top five, which includes Kamal Haasan, Rajinikanth, Vijay and Suriya, to not have a release planned in 2016.
